Rogue One Fan’s Tumblr Post is Exactly Why Diversity in Hollywood Matters
By Ryan General
Aside from its engaging story, surreal special effects, and memorable characters, Rogue One’s diverse cast is one of the most lauded aspects of the latest Star Wars film.
One shining member of the beloved ensemble is Mexican actor Diego Luna, who decided to keep his own Mexican accent in the film to celebrate his ethnicity. His performance would later resonate well with audiences, with one fan revealing how her Mexican father felt upon knowing Diego chose to keep his accent.
Writing on Tumblr, user riveralwaysknew shared the day she took her father to see the film, noting that he was so surprised to see a Mexican in a lead role:
“I wanted my Mexican father, with his thick Mexican accent, to experience what it was like to see a hero in a blockbuster film, speak the way he does.”
Her father, who couldn’t believe what he was seeing, then asked why Diego retained his Mexican accent.
“I told him that Diego has openly talked about keeping his accent and how proud he is of it,” she wrote.
“And my dad was silent for a while and then he said, ‘And he was a main character.’ And I said, ‘He was.’ And my dad was so happy. As we drove home he started telling me about other Mexican actors that he thinks should be in movies in America. Representation matters.”
Diego later discovered the Tumblr post and shared the screenshot of it on his Twitter account with the caption: “I got emotional reading this!”
According to Buzzfeed, the Tumblr user later uploaded a video of her father on YouTube, giving his reaction to Diego’s tweet. Watch the video below:
