Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk and Netflix have confirmed that a second season of the hit Korean series “Squid Game” is on the way.

Although Hwang, 51, had already confirmed in November that he would be making a second season for the hit show, it was not until Monday when Netflix officially joined in to announce that “Squid Game” will return.

The American streaming giant took to Instagram and Twitter to share the news. Accompanying the social media posts is a short video featuring the iconic robot doll Young-hee with a neon red “2” in her iris.

In a statement shared by Netflix on Monday, Hwang thanked “Squid Game” fans for watching the Korean series and making it a hit shortly after it was released in September 2021.

It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year,” Hwang wrote in his letter to fans. “But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world,” Hwang continued. “Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

He went on to tease that Gi-hun, played by Screen Actor’s Guild and Critics’ Choice Award Best Actor winner Lee Jung-jae, is set to return. The character “Front Man,” played by Lee Byung-hun (“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “Red 2”), will also return for the second season.

Hwang also teased that “Squid Game” Season 2 will introduce fans to Cheol-su, the boyfriend of Young-hee the nightmare doll.

Gong Yoo’s (“Coffee Prince,” “Train to Busan”) mysterious “man in the suit with ddakji” might also return. Although nothing much is known about Gong’s character, he appears to be a recruiter for the organization behind the show’s deadly game.

The official release date has yet to be announced, but Hwang told Vanity Fair last month that the much-awaited second season could be released in 2023 or 2024.

While details about the upcoming season’s plot are still under wraps, Hwang confirmed in December that “Squid Game” Season 2 will focus on Gi-hun’s story as he unravels the “mysteries of the organization behind the game.”
