A number of onlookers brought out chairs to make themselves comfortable while watching a man consider jumping off a building in southern China.
The unidentified man was spotted on the rooftop of an 11-story building in Shantou, Guangdong Province, on June 23, according to Xuehua News.
A video of the scene shows the man standing near the edge of the structure and looking downward in apparent contemplation of killing himself.
Locals then gathered near the building, with some sitting on green chairs to behold the spectacle that lasted for almost three hours.
The person filming was reportedly seated, too.
The rest of the onlookers stood in interest, while another one sat on a stool, as seen in the video.
However, rescuers soon saved the man and learned that a dispute with his wife drove him to have suicidal thoughts, NetEase reported.
Netizens shared their two cents:
“Chinese people like to go around and watch things like this.”
“It seems that the people from the previous few days have not dealt with enough.”
“Street, community, neighborhood comrades?”
“What attitude is waiting for? It’s too cold-blooded.”
“Oh, I feel like they are watching a movie.”
This is the second time in a row that Chinese locals made headlines for heartlessly watching suicidal people. Last week, onlookers cheered when a sexual assault victim jumped to her death.
