A Depop shop is under fire from Singaporeans for listing the iconic Singapore Airlines “sarong kebaya” uniform as a “Vintage African Ankara Dress.”
The uniform is being sold on the online clothing resale platform for 49 pounds (approximately $60) by UK-based shop Snakecakevintage. The uniform is described as “funky, indie, boho, 90s, [and] vintage,” and the model wearing it can be seen draped over a chair in one photo.
The product’s listing went viral after Twitter user Leyla Rose shared it on June 22, calling Depop “wild.”
Depop is wild… how are you selling a Singapore Airlines uniform and calling it ‘vintage African’??
That aside, I too like to know what my outfit would look like lying backwards over a chair pic.twitter.com/knrtmypJya

An Ankara dress is made of African wax prints and features colorful patterns, while the sarong kebaya is made using traditional Asian batik and is worn by Singapore Airlines flight attendants. The latter was designed by the late French fashion designer Pierre Balmain in 1968.
Many Singaporeans on Twitter mocked the model’s pose, while some tagged Singapore Airlines’ official Twitter account.
“Suitable and durable [and] even possessed by ghosts,” one Twitter user wrote.
“Can you imagine watching some person walk down the street wearing this as everyday wear? They would think I bought a wonderful vintage piece. Nah girl, you bought the Singapore Air dresscode!” another user commented.
