Chinese Canadian actor Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” had a birthday surprise with the release of the film’s first teaser trailer on Monday.

What happened: Liu, who will play Marvel’s first Asian lead, tweeted a teaser poster for the film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” the morning of his birthday to celebrate, according to Variety.

  • In his tweet, Liu mentioned that the film’s trailer “drops in a few weeks.”
  • Moments after Liu shared the teaser poster, Marvel uploaded the first “Shang-Chi” teaser trailer to YouTube and tweeted about it with a birthday greeting for Liu.
  • Liu shared Marvel Studios’ tweet soon afterward and wrote, “THIS IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

About the film: In “Shang-Chi,” which was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi must “confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization,” as told by Marvel.

  • The film, premiering on Sept. 3, is the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature an Asian lead along with an Asian filmmaking team, according to Variety.
  • “The most exciting thing about stepping into this character was that his backstory has never been told before,” Liu told Entertainment Weekly. “We know so many different versions of Batman’s origin story, how his parents were murdered when he was very young. We know Peter Parker, who was bitten by a radioactive spider, and he loses his uncle. Shang-Chi’s story is very much unknown to most of the world, so we had a lot of freedom and creative liberty to make it the way that we wanted to.”
  • The actors who will star alongside Liu include Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Fala Chan and Ronny Chieng.
