Two children who lost their mother to cancer last year received a special gift from “Shang-Chi” star Simu Liu for Christmas.
Gift of giving: The Chinese Canadian actor donated a PlayStation 5 to the children and $1,000 to the Joanna Duong Chang Memorial Foundation, a charitable institution set up in their mother’s name.
  • The foundation was created and is run by the deceased’s husband Stanley Chang.
  • It is aimed at supporting women-focused charities in Toronto and helping girls achieve their dreams through education.
  • The goal of the organization is to raise $100,000 by the end of 2021, with the money dispersed to charities, including those who “support, educate, improve access and create community for girls and women in varying life stages to be self-confident, build supportive networks and improve their quality of life,” according to the organization’s website.
  • Stanley wrote in a digital memory book that the couple had met during their college years, with him being captivated by a photo of a smiling woman in a red dress.
Very special family: In a Facebook post, Liu shared that he joined Clement Chu and the CCYAA to highlight the family and their foundation’s efforts for the community.
  • Liu uploaded a video showing him wrapping up the PS5 and personally delivering the gift to Chang’s children.
  • “This year for Christmas I really just wanted to spread good cheer and highlight the efforts of someone in the community, who’s doing real good,” said Liu as he drove to Chang’s house.
  • Liu noted how difficult it must have been for the family to go through Joanna’s passing during the pandemic.
  • Upon meeting the family, Liu expressed how he was touched by their story and thankful for the things they do for the community.
  • “We really really appreciate it,” Liu said. “We know that everyone’s kind of stuck in lockdown right now so we definitely wanted to give you guys something to do while you’re all you know cooped up together for the holidays. We brought you a little something that’s brought me a lot of joy.”
