Hello, everyone!

It’s been 25 years since Hong Kong was handed back to China.

Reflecting on the past few years,
opinions among Hong Kongers vary — some are hopeful, some are indifferent. Under the “one country, two systems” model, Hong Kong enjoyed some of their original freedoms and structures. Many pointed out the initial financial crisis that later led to a successful blend of Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets, as well as the violence in 2019.

Protests that turned into bloody clashes between residents and police over basic freedoms have become a sharp reminder of Hong Kong-Beijing relations. Kiwi Chow, the director of the 2021 documentary, "Revolution of Our Times,” notes that while 2019 brought “tremendous trauma” it also showcased the “brilliance of human nature."

Race in America 🌎

Texas is known for its larger-than-life pageants, and
this year, Averie Bishop became the first Asian American woman to win the title of Miss Texas.

Bishop was crowned on Saturday. She revealed her own shock, delight and joy on stage and on her TikTok account (@averiebishop). (Warning: you might cry.)

Bishop is a first-generation Asian law graduate from Southern Methodist University, a Dallas Council Member and consultant on Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson’s Anti-Hate Advisory Council. She represented the city of Carrollton at the competition and plans to start her term as the new Miss Texas with excitement.

Averie Bishop wears her white crown and a white coat in her car. She is smiling at the camera as she tells the audience of her volunteering plans for the day as Miss Carrollton.

Across the country, many politicians, judges and other government officials have been trying their best to delay and push back against the Roe v. Wade decision.

In Seattle, Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Mayor Bruce Harrell,
along with other abortion rights activists, denounced the Supreme Court ruling. Rep. Jayapal highlighted the existing measures from the Senate to codify abortion protection that ultimately, did not go through.

Calling for an end to the filibuster, she also referenced a women’s strike in Iceland which froze most of the country after 90% of participants stopped working as inspiration for U.S. protests. Mayor Harrell also spoke, emphasizing that Seattle police will not be used to help or reinforce “punitive and reactionary” abortion bans in other states.

In Other Asian News 🗞

In northwestern Pakistan, several gunmen attacked UN-funded polio vaccination team, killing three people.

The assailants shot two police officers and a healthcare worker as the team went door-to-door in North Waziristan. This isn’t an isolated incident. In previous public health campaigns, gunmen have also shot and wounded other staff in various cities.

Vaccinations have been met with some opposition in Pakistan from conspiracy theorists and religious figures. However, health experts in the region are worried about worsening outbreaks since additional cases were reported in April. Health authorities are aiming to increase inoculation campaigns in an effort to eliminate polio and protect children from paralysis.

According to the Beijing secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the zero-COVID policy could remain for the next five years.

After the notice was posted on Monday afternoon on various online platforms, the time frame listed was soon removed after it was viewed 1 million times, causing more confusion and anger among residents. The administration is committed to continuing the “strict management of the joint prevention and control coordination mechanism” as soon as they detect infection and transmission.

Still, even as people worry over the possibility of returning to normal life, Beijing already announced in-person schooling to restart, adding to the ambiguity of COVID policies moving forward.

Food and Film 📺

Journalists detail and share the story of foods prepared by the Gujjars, a nomadic pastoral people in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Aru valley.

Milk churned in pots to produce whey for golden crisp kalari cheese discs and harvested morel mushrooms for gucchi pulao, a pilaf of vegetables: These are some of the dishes that highlight a traveling community feeding visiting tourists.

While there are various stories on the origins of the Gujjars, Dr. M. K. Waqar, a 70-year-old member of the Gujjar community believes they originated from Rajasthan and the surrounding areas during the 6th and 7th centuries to escape famine and war.
