A man in Saudi Arabia was sentenced to over 10 years and 2,000 lashes over his tweets about atheism. He was also tasked to pay a fine of $ 5,300 by the court, according to the Associated Press.

The unidentified man was arrested by the Saudi religious police after he was discovered to have allegedly made more than 600 posts on Twitter that deny the existence of God. Some of his posts also ridiculed Qur’an verses, accused prophets of lying and said their teachings fueled hostilities.

The 28-year-old man, who admitted to being an atheist, refused to repent and said that his tweets are his own beliefs and that he has the right to express them.
