More familiar faces have been added to the lineup of Asian American stars lending their voices to the upcoming animated prequel series “Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai.”
During the show’s panel event at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Sandra Oh, Randall Park, George Takei and Bowen Yang were announced as guest stars in the 10-episode series, with Zach Galligan, who played Billy in the original film franchise, also set to make a return.
Already announced to lead the series are actors James Hong as the grandpa, Ming-Na Wen as Fong Wing, BD Wong as Hon Wing and Izaac Wang as Sam Wing.
The prequel series is set in 1920s Shanghai, and will reveal the story of how Sam Wing, who later grows up to become the shop owner in the original 1984 movie, met Gizmo the Mogwai when Sam was 10 years old. The series takes place in the Chinese countryside, weaving in tales from Chinese folklore as Sam and Gizmo venture out with a street thief named Elle on a quest to return Gizmo to their family and find a secret treasure.
“I can’t say too much but because it’s 1920s China, I’m not playing Billy because he wasn’t around,” Galligan shared at the panel. “So I’m playing this cool character. It was really fun and amazing to work with a new group of creative people who are taking a fresh look at the franchise and are expanding the mythology—who knows what they’re going to add. Maybe they’ll add a new transformation or a new rule we don’t know about yet… I think Gremlins fans are going to eat it up.”
“Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai” will premiere next year on HBO Max then later on Cartoon Network.
