When North Korean gymnast Ri Se-Gwang won the gold medal at the Rio Olympics, many wondered why he looked so sad and stone-faced at the podium.
Ri was immediately dubbed “the saddest gold medalist” on the internet. Multiple media outlets speculated that he was sad from experiencing the free word, and then realizing he now has to return back to North Korea.
However, when speaking with journalists, Ri said that he actually felt the complete opposite.
“I was filled with joy because I thought I was able to bring a sense of victory to our leader.” he said.

This makes perfect sense because Ri is actually the third athlete in history to get an Olympic gold medal for North Korea. With that being said, he should get a very nice warm welcome once he returns home.
North Korean athletes have been subject to strict rules during their time in Rio. They were banned from accepting free Samsung smartphones given to each athlete, visiting tourist attractions, and mixing with athletes from other countries.
