Workers Celebrate Thinking They Won the Powerball — Then They Discover Their Horrid Mistake
When a group of 42 workers at Grissini’s Restaurant in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, found out one of their lottery pool tickets matched winning Powerball numbers, they did what most everyone would do: celebrate.
Unfortunately, their raucous celebration only lasted for a little while, as their numbers were only a match for the previous drawing’s numbers.
Their ticket — which had the numbers 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and a Powerball of 17 — was purchased on Saturday for that night’s $900 million drawing, according to NBC New York. The workers, however, had matched their Saturday ticket numbers to Wednesday’s drawing for a $528 million prize.
Video that captured the occasion show the workers shouting “Yes!” as each number was read off. When the final Powerball number is announced, everyone in the restaurant cheers.
One worker hugged his co-workers, tears in his eyes. A dishwasher at the restaurant threw his apron on the floor and quit his job on the spot. A parking lot attendant called his grandmother in Colombia to tell her of his winnings and told a customer to get his own car.
After learning they had not won the lottery, the workers who quit were still welcomed back to their jobs.
The workers, although disappointed, have purchased tickets for tonight’s $1.5 billion Powerball drawing.
