A video of an elderly Asian woman being chased with a bottle of Purell has gone viral on Instagram.
The scene, which took place in Miami Beach, Florida, was posted by a rapper, @1k_johnny_, who currently has 21,000 followers on Instagram and 1,600 subscribers on YouTube.
In the video, the woman can be seen running away.
“Come here! You need some hand sanitizer,” a man is heard saying while chasing the woman. “Sanitize your a**!”
The woman, who was wearing a vest, a red sweatshirt and a pair of black pants, has not been identified as of this writing.
“Jit wild asf😂😭😭 I’m finna Do this Down hea Nokapp Ima catch lingling In Miami,” @1k_johnny_ captioned the video.
The video has received more than 187,000 views since it was posted on Friday, bringing upon mixed reactions.
While some dismissed the video as a joke, others accused the person behind the camera of racism.
Incidents of racism and xenophobia toward Asians and Asian Americans have surged since the escalation of the COVID-19 outbreak. For example, recently, a 44-year-old man was arrested for yelling at an Asian man and his 10-year-old son for not wearing face masks in New York City.
Meanwhile, Asian American lawmakers and civil rights groups have called for the creation of legislation to prevent similar cases.
