Psy joins TikTok one month after ‘Gangnam Style’ trends on the platform

A decade after his music video for “Gangnam Style” became the most-watched video on YouTube, Psy is making the rounds again on the latest popular video-sharing platform, TikTok.
The 44-year-old singer first posted to his new account @42Psy42 on Saturday, generating millions of views within days. His video, which features another person gyrating next to him to the sound of Rasheeda’s “Marry Me,” follows the style of the other lighthearted music videos Psy has been known to create.
His latest video hops on another viral trend on the platform, in which two people engage in a choreographed dance-off to the sound of “Coincidence” by Handsome Dancers.
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” became the first music video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube months after its release in 2012. The video maintained its spot at the top for five years, until Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” surpassed it in 2017.
On TikTok, a remix of “Gangnam Style” went viral last month in a popular trend in which users shared traumatic moments from their lives to the upbeat song, seemingly as a way of making their stories more palatable. Users began their videos with the song playing in the background and would cut to the disturbing moment at the exact time Psy’s famous lyrics “Hey, sexy ladies” began.
A clip of his performance of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” also resurfaced on the platform and went viral earlier this year.
In December, without specifying an exact date, Psy announced that he would release his ninth album in 2022.
