A policeman from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India was recently arrested on suspicion of raping a 7-year-old girl.
The man, who was allegedly drunk at the time of the crime, was apprehended after his colleagues found the girl naked in the officer’s quarters on Saturday, according to AFP via AsiaOne. The case is now being investigated.
“We sent her for a medical examination and are awaiting a final report,” Police Superintendent Vipin Tada told the publication on Sunday.
“The policeman will be undergoing medical tests to confirm whether he was consuming alcohol inside his quarters,” Tada continued in his statement.
The news about the rape caused outrage among locals. A report from the Press Trust of India said that people angrily marched and planned to attack the local police station as a sign of protest, but they calmed down after learning that the suspect was already in police custody.
Rape against women and children are still a huge problem in India. More than 34,000 cases of rape were reported in the country in 2015, according to the statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in 2016.
According to the report, the female victims range from as young as six to women who are over 60 years of age. The largest number of female victims were between the ages of 18 and 30, which is around 17,000 in total.
