‘Phat Prince of Garden Grove’: Vietnamese American Candidate for Mayor Releases Campaign Video

Garden Grove City Council member and mayoral candidate Phat Bui released his official campaign 2020 music video inspired by the hit ‘90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

Running for mayor: The official campaign 2020 music video, released on Sept. 27, featured the Vietnamese American politician in a swag outfit and a face mask on.

  • It briefly tells the story of Bui and how his family fled to South Vietnam and dodged the communist government.
  • After the communists won, Bui and his family fled to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Bui is running for Garden Grove mayor on Nov. 3, competing with Larry Miller, Donald Taylor, Duy Nguyen and current Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones.

Who is Phat Bui: Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Bui attended the University of Minnesota where he triple-majored in mathematics, physics and electrical engineering, his City of Garden Grove profile noted.

  • Bui was a Garden Grove Planning Commissioner from 2010 to 2012 before he was elected as a city council member in 2014.

  • Bui is the president and CEO of software solutions company NetResult LLC and the president of the Vietnamese American Federation in Southern California, which hosts the annual Tet parade in the city.
