A musical based on the Korean pop (commonly referred to as K-pop) genre, aptly titled as “KPOP”, is now playing off-Broadway in New York City, presented by Ma-Yi Theater company and Ars Nova.
However, this is not your ordinary show as it is also an interactive musical where performers actively try to get the audience involved in the singing and dancing, SBS reported.
The “KPOP” musical follows the story of aspiring K-pop male artist F8, and the nine-member girl group Special K, as they train and make their way to stardom as successful performers, according to The New York Times.
Besides the dance moves, musical attendees will also love the music featured in the show. MTV Asia reported that the songs used in “KPOP” are all originally composed and could pass as actual songs of the genre.
Fortunately, theater-goers don’t need to worry about any whitewashing controversies as “KPOP” features a predominantly Asian and Asian-American cast. A few of the names that were mentioned include Ashley Park, James Seol and Jason Tam.

This really should not come as a surprise considering the recent epic win of K-pop boy band BTS against many renowned international artists like Justin Bieber.
KPOP” musical will be on stage at A.R.T./NEW YORK on 502 West 53rd St. from now until October 7.
