Netflix has announced that its highly anticipated reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge” will premiere in November.
Announced during Netflix’s first Upfronts event on Wednesday, the series is inspired by the hit series “Squid Game” and was greenlit over a year ago by the streaming service.
In “Squid Game: The Challenge,” 456 players compete for a staggering $4.56 million cash prize — the largest payout ever for a reality series.
The 10-episode series will feature a range of games — including some inspired by the original series — as well as new challenges.
Co-produced by Studio Lambert, known for successful Netflix shows such as “The Circle,” and ITV Studios-backed The Garden, the series was filmed in the United Kingdom.
Although the show is set for a November release, it has already been in hot water.
Reports back in January revealed the harsh conditions some contestants endured during the challenges, such as below-freezing temperatures.
“People were getting carried out by medics but we couldn’t say anything. If you talk then you’re out” a contestant was quoted saying.
Netflix and Studio Lambert, however, have denied these claims.
In a joint statement to CNN in January, they said, “We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue.”
