Netflix has recently posted the first episode of its new animated series “Skull Island” for free on YouTube.

Key details: The 24-minute episode, titled “Maritime Pilot,” was shared on YouTube on Wednesday.

“Skull Island,” which premiered on June 22, is set in the 1990s and follows three shipwrecked teenagers in the South Pacific who “encounter a menagerie of fearsome creatures — including the giant ape who rules the island: [King] Kong,” according to Netflix.

The new series is the fifth installment of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse franchise. Previous franchise installments include “Godzilla,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

Key people: The anime-influenced series was developed by Brian Duffield for Netflix.

Duffield, Brad Graeber, Jen Chambers, Thomas Tull and Jacob Robinson all serve as the show’s executive producers.

Nicolas Cantu (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”), Darren Barnet (“Never Have I Ever”) and Mae Whitman, who notably voiced Katara in Nickelodeon’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” star as Charlie, Mike and Annie, respectively. Other cast members include Benjamin Bratt, Betty Gilpin, Phil LaMarr, Fryda Wolff and Tania Gunadi.

Reception: Since its release last week, “Skull Island” has received several mixed reviews. Although the show has a critics score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a five out of 10 rating on IGN and a score of 51% on Metacritic.
