Horrific Acid Attack and Suicide Shocks National Taiwan University Campus
By Ryan General
A graduate student took his own life after attacking another student with a corrosive substance on the National Taiwan University (NTU) campus in Taiwan.
The horrific incident, which took place around midnight on Friday in front of an NTU women’s dorm, left the suspect, identified only by his last name Chang, dead and three others injured, UDN reported (via Taiwan News).
Chang, a National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) student, allegedly threw a type of acid on NTU Psychology student surnamed Hsieh, and two other individuals before slitting his own throat with a knife.
According to police reports, Chang initially approached Hsieh while carrying what appeared to be two bottles containing acid.
A brief discussion between the two immediately turned into a heated argument at which point Chang began splashing the acid on Hsieh. He also sprayed acid on a male student supervisor surnamed Lo, and a female security guard surnamed Ku.
Lo narrated that Chang initially appeared to be non-threatening and was only speaking of “trivial matters.” Ku, however, had warned Chang to “go home to resolve private matters”, as it was already midnight.
Chang responded with “give me 10 more minutes,” before taking out two bottles which contained the acid.
Lo noted that he failed to anticipate the attack since Chang had pretended to drink the liquid first before splashing them with it.
Hsieh, however, noticed something was awry and screamed at the suspect, “What is that? Don’t get near me!”
As things began to escalate, Ku gave another warning to Chang, saying, “You should go back!”
In response, Chang reportedly said, “I’m very agitated right now, I can’t cover it up!”
Despite attempts by the security guard to calm him down, Chang was already defiant and soon proceeded with his attack.
Hsieh, who was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment, is currently on life support. Lo and Ku, on the other hand, suffered only minor injuries.
Based on the effects on the victims, police have speculated that Chang used a powerful substance known as “agua regia”, a mix of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid which can dissolve even gold and platinum.
The attack is still being investigated by local authorities.
