Mulan Looks Badass in First Live-Action Teaser
By Ryan General
The first teaser for the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic “Mulan” has dropped and it’s looking pretty good so far.
Walt Disney Studios unveiled the minute-and-a-half clip on Sunday, showcasing the titular heroine Hua Mulan as she finds out that the matchmaker has found her an “auspicious” match.
Mulan, played by actress Liu Yifei, is then shown in a few clips training and, eventually, engaging in action-packed battle.
Disney’s original Mulan was both a critical and box office success when it came out in 1998, grossing over $304 million worldwide in ticket sales and receiving an approval rating of 86%, based on 73 reviews.
The animated version, which generated criticisms in China for deviating from the local myths, told the story of Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of a respected retired warrior. When invaders from the North arrived, the Chinese Emperor ordered that one man from every family must serve the Imperial Army. Mulan secretly took the place of her ailing father.
The live-action remake also stars Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.
“Mulan” is set to be released in Spring 2020.
