Rowan Atkinson’s beloved character Mr. Bean is set to make his first appearance in a Chinese movie early next year via a production called “Top Funny Comedian The Movie.”
The film, which is based on a popular Chinese reality TV show about local comedians, is scheduled to premiere on Jan. 28, 2017, coinciding with the first day of the Spring Festival. According to China Daily, the movie’s plot revolves around the main characters’ adventure while traveling from Beijing to Macau.
Mr. Bean is a popular character in China as the internationally famous British sitcom bearing the same name was a huge hit in the country during its run. While Atkinson’s screen time has not been revealed, fans are already looking forward to seeing how Mr. Bean will interact with the local comics such as Guo Degang and Yue Yunpeng.
According to Guo, he communicated with Atkinson mainly through body language during the shooting, as he speaks very limited English.
“Just with facial expressions and gestures we seemed to understand each other,” Guo was quoted as saying at a promotional event in Beijing. “It was really an interesting experience, which proves that comedy can cross boundaries.”
Atkinson sent his video greetings in Mandarin as he was unable to attend the event.
