A mother in eastern China managed to save her children from a fire by dropping them out of a window in their fifth-floor apartment before succumbing to smoke inhalation later.
The fire in the family’s apartment in Xuchang, Henan Province broke out on Friday.
The mother lived with her two children, a 9-year-old son, and a 3-year-old daughter, according to ET Today.
In a video, the children can be heard calling for help from the window of their burning home as onlookers gathered below.
“Wait two more minutes! Help is coming,” one said.
The mother, however, was unsure if her family can hold that much longer.
She decided to throw a bedsheet out of the window, which onlookers prepared to use as a makeshift cushion.
In the breathtaking moments that followed, the mother tossed her son — who is naturally heavier — out to safety.
Assured that her first child landed safely, she then tossed her daughter out.
Videos of the incident ended as firefighters arrived on the scene. The family was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Unfortunately, the mother, who lost consciousness after saving her children, died after inhaling too much smoke.
“This is sad.”
“A mother’s love is the greatest.”
“The children may not understand now, but when they grow up, they will definitely make sense of their mother’s decision.”
