‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Demon Slayer’ Top Domestic Box Office

“Mortal Kombat” topped the domestic box office in the U.S., generating $23.3 million during its opening weekend, while “Demon Slayer” landed in second place.
Based on the iconic video game of the same name, the martial arts fantasy film from Warner Bros. premiered in 3,073 local theaters on April 23, according to film data tracker The Numbers.
“Mortal Kombat” has well exceeded its $10–$15 million projection, Deadline reportedThe film, which cost $55 million to produce, similarly did well overseas, earning $27.8 million at the international box office.

As of this writing, the film’s total theater revenue has reached $51.1 million.
It was also released on HBO Max on April 23, where it was reportedly viewed by 3.8 million U.S. households, SambaTV reported.
Actor Lewis Tan, who stars in the film as MMA fighter Cole Young, took to social media to celebrate the film’s recent performance. 

Japan’s massive hit, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” from Funimation/Aniplex comes in at second place, having garnered around $21.1 million at the U.S. box office during its American opening weekend from April 23–25.
Overtaking Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away,” “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” became the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, according to CNN. The film was first released in Japan and other territories last year and earned over $435 million worldwide.
