Ashley Park recently collaborated with Meryl Streep on an emotional duet in “Only Murders in the Building.”
Key details: The song was featured in “Grab Your Hankies,” the third episode of the third season of the hit Hulu show. The episode follows Oliver Putnam (played by Martin Short) as he looks for a way to get his murder mystery play “Death Rattle” put on Broadway.
He decides to turn his stage play into a musical, and aspiring star Loretta Durkin (Streep) ends up performing the song “Look for the Light” with fellow actor Kimber Min (Park) in it.
After the episode aired on Aug. 15, Hulu released a video of the full song on YouTube.
What people are saying: Several fans were amazed by Streep and Park’s duet, with one YouTube user writing, “Meryl is captivating, as always, but Ashley Park adds such a beautiful harmony that elevates the piece to another level. Bravo! Great choice.”
“Meryl Streep is simply phenomenal,” another YouTube user commented. “Ashley Park does an outstanding job and they compliment [sic] each other so beautifully.”
Behind-the-scenes details: Grammy winner Sara Bareilles, one of the composers of the song along with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, told The Hollywood Reporter that it “truly felt like a dream” to work alongside Streep and write for her.
“Ashley Park’s glorious counter melody was added later, and I got goosebumps the first time I heard it,” Bareilles said.
For Streep: Pasek and Paul, the songwriters behind “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” revealed that “Look for the Light” was created with Streep’s voice in mind, and Park’s part was added later on.
