A female valedictorian got on the nerves of the Twitter community after she bragged in a tweet about her 4.5 GPA, full-ride to the University of Texas, nice legs and undocumented status.
Mayte Lara, a graduate of Crockett High School in Austin, recently took to Twitter to announce her life accomplishments. She tweeted a collage of herself at graduation with the following caption:
“Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords and medals, nice legs, oh and I’m undocumented.”
Her post received thousands of retweets and likes before her account was deactivated.
Lara also had a lot of critics who were upset by the fact that she was receiving a free scholarship to the University of Texas despite being an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
The college-bound graduate realized her mistake when she began receiving unwanted attention. She tweeted at one point:
“I want all this attention from strangers to stop already.”
A friend of Lara allegedly tweeted her:
“I checked your tweet this morning and it BLEW up. LOL.”
She then responded:
“I know! I didn’t think it would do that tbh and it’s kinda scary and want to stop.”
Lara’s full tuition scholarship cannot be rescinded because of the fact that she is undocumented. A spokesman for the University of Texas said:
“In accordance with state law, Texas universities — including the University of Texas schools — have for decades granted two-semester tuition waivers to valedictorians of Texas public high schools, without regard to their residency status.
State law also does not distinguish between documented and undocumented graduates of Texas high schools in admissions and financial aid decisions. University policies reflect that law.”
Success is definitely something to be proud of, however, it’s important to also remember to stay humble.
