Elle Australia’s latest issue marked a world-first for a fashion publication when it shot its cover and fashion spread entirely on an iPhone.
Using the portrait mode on the iPhone 7 Plus, Australian photographer Georges Antoni captured the images of digital fashion guru and social media star Margaret Zhang for the publication’s June issue.
Zhang, a 24-year-old couture expert, rose to fashion fame via her wildly influential blog Shine by Three, a project which she started in her teens. Today, her social media channels have almost 1 million followers combined.
In her interview with Elle, Zhang explained what differentiates her from other bloggers who have similarly infiltrated the fashion scene:
“I have a blog but I don’t necessarily identify myself as a blogger – I get paid as a freelancer, a photographer, a consultant,” Zhang was quoted as saying. “Blogger is not on my business card because it’s not my job… I don’t do sponsored posts, I don’t do paid Instagram posts, I don’t do paid blog posts.”
According to Mashable, the pictorial was shot on Bondi Beach during sunset, vividly capturing the location’s stunning colors.
“One thing that struck me was how liberating it was to shoot and not worry about lenses, tripods, tethering to the computer, etc,” Antoni was quoted as saying.
“It’s also such an interesting dynamic to see how the public are so conditioned to seeing people shooting on their phones that they don’t really take notice, so the shoot could happen in a much more stealth way.”
The use of an iPhone has been previously used for commercial publication photography in the U.S. with Billboard magazine back in February, featuring Camila Cabello in an outdoor shot.
