An Iranian man is facing attempted murder charges after he got himself and his Filipina girlfriend severely burned when he allegedly set the woman aflame inside a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan on Friday.
Local media reported that an argument had broken out earlier between the couple at an eatery in the Ibaraki prefecture. Witnesses claim that the 52-year-old man allegedly poured an unknown liquid over the 36-year-old woman before lighting her on fire, Agence France-Presse reported.
When the restaurant staff called for help, they told rescuers that: “People are burning”. Both were unconscious and badly burned when the rescuers arrived. The couple was then rushed to a nearby hospital where they remain under observation.
While there were a number of customers present during the fiery incident, no one else was reported injured. Local authorities are set to investigate the Iranian man for attempted murder.
According to Kyodo News (via AFP), the couple had been previously advised by authorities to stay away from each due to a dispute involving their child.
