A man in Hong Kong met his untimely demise on Tuesday after reportedly falling from his apartment building while trying to retrieve his AirPods.
The 26-year-old man, only identified as Fan, was playing video games in the apartment he shared with his brother in Sai Wan, Hong Kong, just before the fatal accident happened, according to reports.
While trying to retrieve his AirPods, which he had dropped onto a metallic canopy outside his window, several eyewitnesses reportedly tried to stop him, thinking he was attempting suicide. He reassured them that he was not trying to kill himself.
A relative saw Fan climbing out the window and claimed that he said “I’m not jumping,” according to the South China Morning Post.
Fan reportedly slipped and fell from either the fourth or fifth floor of the building. He landed close to the pavement on Eastern Street.
Paramedics arrived at the scene at 12:18 a.m. and found Fan in a coma lying on the ground with severe head injuries. He was subsequently taken to Queen Mary Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to reports.
Hong Kong media stated that the man, who worked in construction, was married. His wife and child are reportedly in China.
While the cause of his death has not yet been determined, preliminary investigations revealed that he slipped and fell from his apartment building. Authorities are currently classifying the accident as a case of an individual falling from a height.
