A 28-year-old man in Yulin, China was arrested on Friday evening after killing seven children and wounding 19 others in a knife attack.
The man, identified by his surname Zhao, killed five girls and 2 boys as the middle school students were returning home from school at around 6 p.m. The remaining survivors are being treated at a local hospital but their conditions are unknown.
The suspect, who attended the same middle school more than a decade prior, told police he committed the crime because he still hated his classmates for bullying him then, according to Shanghaiist.
Photos from the gruesome scene are now going viral on Chinese social media. Calls for blood donations were shared on social media as well, with actress Angelababy sharing the post. Many have also gathered in front of the hospital to help.
Knife attacks are unfortunately common in China due to restrictions on the use of firearms, but have decreased in recent history. Last year, a man armed with a cleaver made headlines after going on violent rampage in a Walmart in Shenzhen, China, killing 2 and injuring 9.
