Kyle Hanagami reveals ‘Mean Girls’ choreo was inspired by Blackpink

Choreographer Kyle Hanagami, known for architecting some of Blackpink’s dance moves, has shared that he drew inspiration from the K-pop girl group while working on the 2024 musical adaptation of “Mean Girls.”
Hanagami’s influence: In a red-carpet interview with MTV, Hanagami revealed that he incorporated elements from Blackpink routines into the Christmas dance scene of the comedy musical film, considering the influence of the group on the younger generation.
“I feel like this is the generation that grew up watching Blackpink,” Hanagami said. “So when I was choreographing the Christmas dance, I was like, ‘Let’s put a little bit of inspiration from Blackpink in there.’ So it’s definitely kind of inspired by some of the work that I’ve done for other artists just because I feel like it’s influenced this new generation of performers and actors.”
About Hanagami: Aside from Blackpink, the 37-year-old choreographer and creative director previously choreographed performances for renowned artists such as Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas and boy band NSYNC. He marked a new milestone with his dance routines in the 2024 “Mean Girls,” which adapts the Broadway show of the same title that earned 10 Tony nominations.
About the movie: The new “Mean Girls” film, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. from the screenplay by Tina Fey — who reprises her role as Ms. Norbury — debuted at the top of last weekend’s box office with $34.5 million in domestic and global sales. It stars two AAPI artists: Avantika, who plays Karen Shetty, and Auli’i Cravalho, who plays Janis ʻImi’ike.
