Japanese American actress, singer, and model Kiko Mizuhara posted photos that stirred controversy among social media users in Japan.
Mizuhara, whose real name is Audrie Kiko Daniel, 28, is being criticized for posting a picture from her recent photoshoot for the Autumn/Winter 2019 issue of Germany’s Indie Magazine, where she sits on top of a low table in her underwear with her legs spread.
Japanese social media users believe it displays a “lack of etiquette,” according to SoraNews24. She was also being criticized for disrespecting traditional Japanese culture.
Some users also placed blame on the photographer for not realizing the possible backlash. Neither Kiko nor Indie Magazine have released any public comments about the controversy.
Despite the controversy surrounding the post, this is reportedly Kiko’s most liked picture from the photoshoot. It also gained praise from some of her fans.
There are certain rules to follow when it comes to traditional rooms such as taking off shoes, avoid stepping on the wooden part of the doorway, take extra care not to step over the seams between mats, and guests should sit furthest from the door and in front of the tokonoma decorations.
Kiko is set to appear in the Japan special of “Queer Eye” on November 1 on Netflix.
