The official “Star Wars” YouTube channel has released a short video about Kelly Marie Tran‘s “The Last Jedi” experience, from casting to credits and everything in between.
The video opened up with the auditions for Rose Tico, showing the all-too-important chemistry read with John Boyega. The mini-doc’s first look at Tran was just as she had wrapped up the read.
“Hi, I’m Kelly Tran, I just finished the chemistry read for Star Wars,” she said before bursting into laughter. “I feel crazy!”
The clip then showed her audition, with the pair seamlessly connecting as if they were made to perform with each other.
“I really, really, really, really like Kelly,” said Rian Johnson, the film’s director. “She is like…the character that I had in my head when I was writing. She showed up.”
A year later, Tran was on set as the surprise, relatable hero of the Resistance. “So many people wish for something like this,” Tran said, incredulously. “I still don’t believe I’m doing it.”
She also spoke of why she believed her character really resonated with others. “Rose is not an amazing pilot or a Jedi. She’s strong in a different way. I think that’s how she holds her own.”
The video also touched upon the relationship between Tran and Boyega and how important that was for the movie. “One of the many reasons why Kelly was right for the part was seeing her and John spark off of each other,” said Johnson of the pair’s chemistry.
“They start realizing that the two of them have abilities that nobody else has and that they could really help the resistance if they were to work together.”
“We’re making a Star Wars movie,” Tran continued. “I’ve just been so lucky to see how much work goes into everything and to see the end project has been magical.”
