DEBUNKED: Kellie Chauvin and Minnesota Officer Tou Thao Are Not Siblings
By Bryan Ke
Claims from social media users saying that Derek Chauvin’s wife, Kellie Chauvin, is the sister of Tou Thao, the other officer involved in the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has been debunked.
Amanda Mason-Sekula, Kellie’s lawyer, said in an email that her family was harassed by a false rumor that the wife and the Hmong police officer were related, according to Snopes.
“Tou Thao is NOT Ms. Chauvin’s brother. I would GREATLY appreciate help putting that rumor to rest,” Mason-Sekula said. “Her family has been harassed and threatened based on multiple incorrect reports.”
AsAm News reportedly checked public records and found no evidence to support the rumor of Derek Chauvin being Thao’s brother-in-law.
Kellie Chauvin reportedly has a brother who is also a police officer. He is not Thao, works in St. Paul and was not involved in George Floyd’s death, Mason-Sekula said.
Kellie, who was born in Laos in 1974 and fled to Thailand with her family in 1977 after the war, is now filing for divorce.
She is looking to change her last name as well as the titles of their homes, CNN reported. It is unclear what surname she would go with, but she was previously known as Kellie Thao and Kellie Xiong.
