K-pop idol Kang Daniel set the Guinness World Record for “Fastest Time to Gain 1 Million Followers on Instagram.”

Kang, who recently concluded promotions with Wanna One, joined the social media platform on New Year’s Day.

The 22-year-old star amassed one million followers at 9:36 a.m. PST on Jan. 2, just 11 hours and 36 minutes after he signed up.

As such, he broke the record previously held by Pope Francis, who collected the same number of followers in 12 hours after joining in 2016.

Kang rose to popularity after emerging on top of the second season of South Korean survival reality show Produce 101.

Eleven contestants ultimately won the talent competition to become members of Wanna One.

As an interim group composed of members from various entertainment labels, Wanna One, like its predecessor IOI, was meant to conclude its promotions after a year.

The group’s contract expired on Dec. 31, with members returning to their home companies.
