Keanu Reeves surprised fans at the San Diego Comic-Con with a teaser for his upcoming film, “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
An unsuspecting audience was completely taken off-guard on Friday when the 57-year-old actor gave them a peek at John Wick’s return more than three years after the third film of the series was released.
The trailer hints at another action-packed hit with the potential to outdo even 2019’s hugely successful “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” which featured ninjas on motorcycles, a dazzling Halle Berry and Wick shooting guns on horseback riding through New York City.
While Berry does not appear in the teaser, other familiar faces present include Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick and Ian McShane.
New to the film are “Ip-Man” star Donnie Yen — one of the most famous Hong Kong and Hollywood action stars to date — and “Mortal Kombat” actor Hiroyuki Sanada. Both stars, with their comprehensive experiences in the action-genre, are sure to elevate the film’s fight scenes.
Reeves originally attended the convention for his comic book debut “Brzrkr,” which was published by Boom! Studios last year.
Later that day, however, Reeves crashed Collider’s Directors on Directing panel in Hall H, where “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski was a panelist. There, the surprise one-minute teaser trailer was played for viewers.
While little of the plot is conveyed, the film appears to remain true to the signature Wick fashion, promising epic fight scenes with lots of guns and lots of swords.
“Have you given any thought to where this ends?” a voice narrates dramatically as the video moves through scenes of dimly lit rooms and shady men.
“No one — not even you — can kill everyone,” the clip continues as the action intensifies, showing a rain-soaked Wick hurling an ax with both hands into someone’s forehead.
The bar for the newest addition to the franchise is high, with each film in the series having outdone its predecessor at the box office each time.
“John Wick,” first released in 2014, made $86 million worldwide. “John Wick: Chapter 2” made a whopping $171.5 million in 2017, more than doubling revenue, and the latest “John Wick: Chapter 3 –Parabellum,” made $327.3 million.
“John Wick 4” is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 24, 2023.
