Japanese Woman Arrested After Testing $134 of Melons Too Hard

The incident occurred on July 28 when a 64-year-old woman, whose name was not revealed, entered a grocery store in Kushiro City, Hokkaido Prefecture around 1:30 p.m., according to HBC News via SoraNews24.

Upon entering the establishment, the woman started puncturing 13 Yubari King melons and causing damages of 14,000 yen ($134).

Yubari King is a well-known type of expensive melon grown in Yubari, a city in Hokkaido. A man from two years ago made headlines for buying a pair of premium Yubari melons worth over $29,000 at an auction.

No security cameras captured the woman gouging the melons, and there were no witnesses. Regardless, Kushiro City police were still able to track the suspect down and made an arrest.

The motive behind the melon poking was not made clear in the report, but many social media users were left confused by what happened.

“I read about people who just really like the feeling of penetrating fruit,” one user said, as translated by SoraNews24.

“I guess if I had a good melon poking technique, I’d want to use it as much as possible too,” another one said.
