A prestigious list of the very best restaurants in the world has placed Japan and China at the top two spots in the international ranking of fine dining destinations.

According to French-based “La Liste”, both Asian countries have earned their rankings for having the most number of the top international restaurants. Japan reportedly has the most eateries included in the global top 1,000 restaurants with 138, while China comes in close second with 123 high-quality restaurants out of 1000.

After Japan and China, the United States reportedly has the next highest number of top restaurants.

“The rise and rise of China is the big story,” said list compiler Jorg Zipprick. “Asia has a lot more restaurants than Europe and it is only logical that La Liste will reflect that.”

It is worth noting, however, that the list’s top 100 restaurants have mostly consisted of French eateries. In fact, this year’s chosen best restaurant in the world is Guy Savoy’s flagship Paris riverside restaurant, reports AFP.  Le Bernardin in New York comes in second overall while Japanese restaurant Kyubey, hailed as the best sushi restaurant in Tokyo, took the third place.

Zipprick shared that he created La Liste three years ago, as a “more scientific and reliable” rival to the British list of the world’s 50 Best Restaurants. The official La Liste rankings will be officially published on Monday.
