People are trolling President Donald Trump’s new immigration hotline by reporting cases of space alien abductions.
In an effort to assist victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, the administration launched the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement Office (VOICE) on Wednesday, which features a support hotline.
Interestingly, the office’s launch coincided with “National Alien Day”, so people took the opportunity to troll the hotline by reporting how aliens “of the UFO variety” victimized them:
Among these callers is Alexander McCoy, a Marine Corps veteran, who told BuzzFeed that trolling the hotline might be a “catchy way” to protest the administration’s “use of bigoted language and racist stereotypes of criminality.”
McCoy said he called to report that he had been abducted by a UFO. The operator let out a “big sigh” before hanging up.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement couldn’t be more frustrated as the trolls affected the service. A spokesperson told BuzzFeed:
“There are certainly more constructive ways to make one’s opinions heard than to prevent legitimate victims of crime from receiving the information and resources they seek because the lines are tied up by hoax callers.”
The spokesperson said the agency will adjust resources as necessary to ensure that victims — real victims — get the help they need.
VOICE, under the Department of Homeland Security, was established in response to President Trump’s executive orders on January 25, which urged a crackdown on illegal aliens.
