An Indian man, along with his father and mother, were arrested by the authorities in Florida for brutally assaulting the man’s “disobedient wife” and now face several charges for the assault.
Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office arrived at the scene on Saturday at around 6:30 a.m. after receiving a call from 33-year-old Silky Gaind’s parents, Tampa Bay Times reported. Authorities described the woman as “badly beaten and bruised over her entire body” due to the abuse she received from both her husband, 33-year-old Devbir Kalsi, and his family.
Kalsi’s 67-year-old father, Jasbir Kalsi, and 61-year-old mother, Bhupinder Kalsi, reportedly flew from India to Florida at their son’s request, an investigation by the agency revealed. The purpose of the visit was to “counsel and discipline” the man’s “disobedient wife.”
According to the police report, Kalsi and Gaind got into a heated argument on Friday night when the husband struck his wife “repeatedly and forcefully.” Kalsi’s parents later joined the beating when the woman tried to defend herself, resulting in more bruising on the victim’s face, neck and torso.
The victim and suspect’s 1-year-old child, whose name has been left out from the report, was also hit in the face during the fight. The infant was later put in a separate room from the mother.
During the ordeal, Kalsi’s 67-year-old father threatened Gaind with a kitchen knife held to her throat, as reported by Fox13 News.
Many of the neighbors were saddened by how Gaind was treated by her husband and his family.
“I’m both sad and scared at the same time. I’m upset that this was all going on right across the street from me and I never knew and couldn’t do anything about it and couldn’t help her because that really breaks my heart to know that a woman and her one-year-old were being treated so poorly and were so scared,” Stephanie Payne, a neighbor who lives just across the street from the victim’s house said in an interview.
“Awful, nobody should go through that. It really is heartbreaking. There’s a brand new baby. But who beats their wife up and his mother and dad help him? Who does that?” an unidentified neighbor who is close to the victim told the news station.
Both father and son are facing charges for false imprisonment, child abuse and denying access to 911. The former is also going to face an additional charge of felony battery, while his father is being accused of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for using the knife.
The mother, however, is facing battery domestic violence and failure to report child abuse charges.
The family is now being detained at Hillsborough County jail, and they could all be deported to India, according to the sheriff’s office.
