A recently married Indian man has filed for divorce after allegedly discovering that his wife has a beard and spoke like a man.
According to the Times of India, the man was not able to speak to his wife before their wedding ceremony since the marriage was arranged by the couple’s parents.
Rupesh (his real name is withheld) did not even see his soon-to-be bride Rupa’s (name changed) face before their wedding day because she had been wearing a veil.
“When I saw her for the first time, she had make-up on,” Rupesh was quoted as saying.
“After spending seven days with her, I went out of town for my job. After returning, I noticed she was growing a beard, and also realized that she sounds like a man.”
Rupesh reportedly informed his in-laws about his concerns, but they told him that he had no choice but to stay with her as they were now married. He then decided to file a divorce application.
During the divorce hearing, Rupa claimed she developed her deep voice and grew her facial hair due to hormonal issues. She told the court, however, that her condition can be corrected with medical treatment.
Rupa further argued that her family had earlier paid the man a dowry prior to their wedding, noting that alimony would have to be paid in case they get separated.
According to Rupa’s lawyers, the husband had physically and mentally abused Rupa, claiming that he was citing false reasons for the divorce because he just wanted to evict her from their house.
After hearing arguments of both the parties, the court eventually rejected Rupesh’s divorce application, noting that such grounds do not warrant a divorce.
Female beard growth, which occurs very rarely, is often a result of a hormonal imbalance (usually androgen excess), or a rare genetic disorder known as hypertrichosis.
British model Harnaam Kaur, who suffers from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), is known for embracing her beard growth and becoming a spokesperson for the body positive movement.
