It’s time to get down to business as Walt Disney Studios revealed the first glimpse of Liu Yifei as Hua Mulan.
Production on the live-action remake of the Disney classic is officially underway as the film begins shooting in China and New Zealand, and is set for a March 27, 2020 release date in the United States.

While fans were unhappy that the initial synopsis deviated from the original “Mulan,” according to E! News, the film studio described the latest version as “the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.”
Cast in November 2017, Yifei will star alongside Utkarsh Ambudkar, Yoson An, Rosalind Cheng Pei-Pei, Chum Ehelepola, Jason Scott Lee, Nelson Lee, Gong Li, Jet Li, Tzi Ma, Donnie Yen and Ron Yuan.
The movie was originally set to open in theaters on Nov. 2, 2018, but it was pushed back so casting directors could find the perfect actress to play the titular female warrior.
The live-action remake received some criticism from fans after Disney changed the original story, did not include any original songs, and excluding bisexual icon General Li Shang from the adaptation.
The 1998 animated feature accumulated more than $304 million at the box office worldwide and received an Oscar nomination.
