HBO Max released the teaser trailer for “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” an animated prequel to the “Gremlins” films, on Wednesday.
The upcoming series, which was first announced in 2019, takes place in 1920s Shanghai. It features a young Sam Wing, who eventually goes on to become the mysterious shopkeeper Mr. Wing in “Gremlins” (1984) and “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” (1990).
Wing, who is voiced by Izaac Wang (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) is tasked with bringing Gizmo, a young Mogwai, home. The two go on a dangerous journey through the Chinese countryside, battling various monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore, as well as an army of evil Gremlins.
The 10-episode series’ cast includes Ming-Na Wen and BD Wong as Sam’s parents and James Hong as Sam’s grandfather. Other cast members include Sandra Oh, George Takei, Randall Park, Bowen Yang, Matthew Rhys, AJ LoCascio, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green and Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in the original “Gremlins” films.
Steven Spielberg and Tze Chun serve as the show’s writers. They also serve as executive producers alongside Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sam Register and Brendan Hay. Joe Dante, who directed the original “Gremlins” films, serves as producer.
“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” is set to premiere on HBO’s recently rebranded streaming service, HBO Max, in May. Check out the series’ teaser trailer below:
