Toho is releasing a black-and-white version of their hit film “Godzilla Minus One” that is titled “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color.”
Driving the news: Toho released the trailer of “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color” on Wednesday, teasing what fans can expect in a classic-looking refresh of its latest movie.
“Godzilla Minus One” was released in Japan on Nov. 3, coinciding with the franchise’s 70th anniversary. The movie is set in post-World War II Japan, where the iconic kaiju causes a rampage that brings the country from “zero to minus one.”

About the re-release: Writer and director Takashi Yamazaki has explained that they have been working on a black-and-white re-release “for a long time,” as per Bloody Disgusting. Yamazaki said he asked the production to make adjustments to the movie using “various mattes as if they were creating a new movie.”
“What I was aiming for was a style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography,” he said. “By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerges.”
Release date: “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color” is set for release in Japan on Jan. 12, 2024. So far, there is no word whether it will also be available in other countries.
The original film made history as the highest-grossing live-action Japanese movie in the U.S. after its premiere on Dec. 1.
