Toho International has partnered with several companies for kaiju-sized events slated for Godzilla Day 2022 next week, including a first-ever screening of the 2002 movie “Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla” in U.S. theaters.
In partnership with Fathom Events, Toho International, the Japanese studio’s U.S. subsidiary, will screen the movie across 450 theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 3, along with a never-before-seen message from Toho International Chief Godzilla Officer Keiji Ota.
In addition to the 2002 movie, the original 1954 “Godzilla,” the first film of the franchise, will also be screened in U.S. theaters in Japanese with English subtitles. The films are screening in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse and will be available at select Alamo locations.
Toho International will also be organizing trivia events with King Trivia centered around the franchise that will run through the week of Nov. 3. “Blankos Block Party” will also feature Godzilla, Mothra and Mecha-Godzilla as playable characters in the social media party game.
Restaurants and other food vendors are also serving Godzilla-inspired options, including a Godzilla-sized pastrami sandwich created by Langer’s, custom Godzilla-character macarons from Honey & Butter Macarons, a 16-piece Godzilla hot sauce collector’s set that goes for $235, Godzilla-themed coffees and Godzilla dry rubs, to name a few.
Yokocho, a London-based retro ramen house, will also be providing ramen, drinks and desserts themed around the King of the Monsters during the celebration.
Fans can also expect Godzilla merchandise, including a Hot Wheels x Godzilla collaboration between Mattel and Toho International, a new figure line from Super7, official merch at Kinokuniya book stores and swag from Mondo.
Godzilla’s long history has shaped the world of pop culture and monster fandom for nearly 70 years,” Lora Cohn, managing director of Toho International, said. “Godzilla means so much to generations all over the world and we’re thrilled to be partnering with incredible collaborators to honor the world’s most famed and destructive prehistoric sea monster by offering our fans a chance to participate in screenings, gaming contests, and more for this year’s Godzilla Day.”
Created by Tomoyuki Tanaka on Nov. 3, 1954, the multi-billion dollar “Godzilla” franchise has released over 35 films and created a global fandom.
