Watch: World’s only known all-white giant panda is caught on video

A giant albino panda that was first spotted in southwestern China in 2019 was recently captured by a motion-sensitive field camera in Sichuan province.
In the footage, the panda can be seen approaching a mother panda and her cub in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in Wenchuan county.
The bear, which is pale cream-colored and has unique red eyes, is believed to be the world’s only all-white panda. When it was first discovered in 2019, researchers believed that it was 1 or 2 years old.
According to Wei Rongping, a senior engineer at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas, the mother panda’s response to the albino panda suggests that it may be one of the mother’s offspring.
“This female panda was extremely ‘calm’ and did not conform to the general rule. One possibility is that the female panda is the mother of the all-white panda,” Wei told Shine, noting that “female pandas with cubs can be very aggressive when an adult panda approaches or invades.”
The panda’s sex has not been determined.
Researchers said that the panda’s albinism — the lack or complete absence of pigmentation — may result in physical impairments or disease. However, the rare panda, which is about the size of an adult, reportedly appears to be healthy.
