Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently donated $10 million to help people affected by the Maui wildfires.
The fund will provide financial aid to thousands of residents who were forcibly evacuated due to the Maui wildfires.
Kick-starting the effort: The two celebrities wrote in their Instagram post that they are “honored to start this campaign with $10 million and ask for your help in donating to those who have lost their homes.” The initial donation will go through the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation.
The fund has reportedly received guidance, insight and the blessing of community elders, leaders and residents, including Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, Keali’i Reichel, Jason Momoa and Archie Kalepa, to name a few.
Who will receive the money: Winfrey and Johnson explained in their post that displaced residents from Lahaina will be eligible to receive $1,200 monthly to “help them through this period of recovery.” Affected residents can go to the People’s Fund of Maui website to apply for aid.
About the wildfires:
The uncontrollable fires spread across Hawaii
after dry conditions and strong winds passing through the state from Hurricane Dora ignited the blaze in early August. As of this writing, 115 deaths
