Dutch Man Hospitalized After Waiting 10 Days in Chinese Airport for Internet Girlfriend

A Dutch man flew to China and waited at the airport for 10 days in the name of love for a Chinese woman he met online.
Alexander Piter Cirk, 41, met a 26-year-old Chinese woman online nearly two months ago thanks to a convenient social networking app. Recently, Cirk flew from Holland to Changsha Huanghua International Airport to surprise his dearly beloved.
According to Shanghaiist, Cirk told reporters that he applied for a visa and booked a ticket to China because he couldn’t stand the distance. CCTV News reported that once he arrived at the airport, his love interest was nowhere to be found.
The smitten man decided to wait at the terminal until she arrived. He waited for ten days at the airport until he had to be hospitalized for exhaustion.
His online girlfriend, who is surnamed Zhang, contacted Hunan TV aftering hearing about him on the news. Zhang explained that she had not expected Cirk.
Apparently, he had sent her a picture of his flight information before his departure, but she didn’t know what it meant. She elaborated that they had discussed waiting a year until meeting in person before he decided to hop on the plane.
Zhang also added that she was unable to meet Cirk at Changsha because she was out of town for a cosmetic surgery in Zhengzhou, Henan province. She informed reporters that she is still planning to continue her online relationship with Cirk once they get back in touch.
Meanwhile, Cirk has caught a flight back home after his heartbroken visit.

If this happened on campus, Stanford should issue a clear public update and specific safety actions.

Agree. People need facts and process, not silence. The school should confirm what is being investigated.

Also important to separate verified details from rumors so this does not spiral online.

The death threat part is extremely serious. Hoping law enforcement and campus security are already involved.

This is where official reporting and support channels need to be visible and easy to access.
