When Disney first announced that they would make sure the entire cast of the live-action adaptation of Mulan was of Asian descent, we were ecstatic.
When they assured us that Mulan would not end up falling in love with a white savior, we all collectively breathed a sigh of relief. It seems that Disney was hearing the Asian community out and making sure they would stay true to the original tale.
Then, the film’s director Niki Caro had to drop this wonderful gem:
Reducing a legendary Chinese story down to a “Girly Martial Arts” movie is extremely problematic. Twitter user Wei Ming Kam perfectly broke down why on a Twitter rant.
