Constance Wu has finally shared a much-awaited update on the highly anticipated “Crazy Rich Asians 2,” claiming that “the wheels are moving.”
Speaking to reporters while on tour to promote her Amazon Prime series “The Terminal,” in which she appears alongside “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor Chris Pratt, Wu revealed that she recently spoke with producer John Pinotti about the sequel.
Well, I actually just had lunch with John Pinotti, one of the producers, a few weeks ago because he wanted to talk to me about gearing up and getting ready to film Crazy Rich Asians 2. So yeah, the wheels are moving,” Wu, 40, told AsAm News.
Based on Kevin Kwan’s novels “China Rich Girlfriends” and “Rich People Problems,” the second and third installments of the movie trilogy were reportedly supposed to be filmed back-to-back in 2020 but were delayed indefinitely.
Henry Golding, who played Nick Young in the 2018 romantic comedy, briefly hinted in June 2021 as to why the hit film’s sequel has been in limbo. Golding, 35, said in jest that Warner Bros. would need to “lock down” director Jon M. Chu to make the movie since he is already working on several other projects.
Chinese Australian writer Amy Wang joined the production team in March, replacing Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli following a pay controversy in 2019.
While speaking about filming the first movie, Wu told Screen Rant on Thursday that she enjoyed working with everyone on set, adding, “Awkwafina has become one of my best friends, so I’m really excited to get back in that saddle and give you all a sequel.”
Warner Bros. has also greenlit a “Crazy Rich Asians” spinoff focusing on Gemma Chan’s character Astrid Young Teo and her relationship with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr.
