A liquor store clerk was shot to death while trying to stop a robbery in West Covina, California, on Sunday night.
What happened: The victim, 34, was working at Big Bob’s Liquors and Market on West Puente Avenue before 9 p.m. when two men entered and began to steal merchandise, according to police. He reportedly chased the suspects, who then opened fire on him before fleeing in a white SUV.
The aftermath: The victim was found outside the store with gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was taken to a hospital, where he died later.
What loved ones are saying: Family members identified the victim as Karan Singh, according to FOX 11. He was from India and was the store owner’s brother-in-law.
“He’s a very nice kid. He’s been with us for about a year, he has a family background,” the store owner said, as per Eyewitness News.
Meanwhile, customers said Singh treated them like family. “He’s like a brother to us,” Glenn Farias told CBS News.
What’s next: Singh leaves behind his wife and a 12-year-old son, whom he hoped to bring over to the U.S. His family is reportedly working on posting a $25,000 reward for information leading to the suspects, as well as a GoFundMe page.
West Covina police are looking for the suspects, whose images were caught on surveillance cameras. Anyone with information is urged to call them at 626-939-8688.
